Ex-Governor Paterson Getting an Uncontested Divorce

Former New York Governor David Paterson and his spouse Michelle Paterson filed for divorce on Friday, January 17. The couple was married for more than 20 years and had separated in September of 2012, saying that it was "mutual and amicable". They are now pursuing an amicable divorce, having submitted a petition for an uncontested divorce to the Manhattan Supreme Court. The divorce looks to be even more straightforward, as child custody will not be an issue of contention. Their only child is older than 18 years old. According to a spokesman for the former governor, the two filed for the divorce together and had already reached an agreement on the terms of the divorce settlement.

As ugly as divorce can be, it does not always have to be the case. For many couples, legal separation paves the way to a simpler, less stressful divorce. When it comes to getting a peaceful divorce, couples have a number of options to choose from as well. With an uncontested divorce, both parties can reach an agreement on all the major issues, making the decisions for their own lives and saving time and money in the divorce process. Even if a couple has some issues to work out in the settlement, with divorce mediation, a mediator can help both couples to negotiate a satisfactory agreement in less time than it would take for a judge to make decisions for the couple in a trial. In some litigated divorces, a judge will order mediation anyway. Not only can pursuing a less contentious route of divorce save you needless pain and stress, it can save you a great deal of time and money. You also reserve the right to decide the terms of your future.
