Is There a Higher Risk of Depression After Divorce?

A new study suggests that divorce does not heighten the risk of depression, across the board anyway. Some people are more prone to depression after a divorce than others. As it turns out, there is a heightened risk for post-divorce depression in people who were already at risk for it. This is from a study that was published in the journal Clinical Psychological Science, and it was based off of information in another study that looked at more than 7,000 people between the ages of 25 and 74.

Even though previous research at posited that divorcees have a greater chance of having depression, this study qualified that statement. According to this study, almost 60 percent of divorcees who suffered from depression before a divorce had another bout of depression after the divorce. This is a significant difference from the divorcees who had no previous episodes of depression. Only ten percent of people suffered from depression for the first time after a split. According to one of the researchers, this means that more often than not, people will be able to recuperate from divorce fairly well. This also sheds light on how other people need to prepare for their divorce. If someone has a history of depression, they "deserve special attention for support and counseling services," said one researcher.
