The Woman's Bar Association of the State of New York Commends the Supreme Court for Their Recent Decision Recognizing Equality in Marriage

The Woman’s Bar Association of the State of New York (WBASNY) salutes the United States Supreme Court for their recent decision to rule against DOMA and recognize the equality of marriage for all people in the country. Just last week the Supreme Court ruled that the Defense of Marriage Act, which was instated in 1996 in favor of marriage being classified as a union between only one man and one woman, has now been deemed unconstitutional.

As a result of the ruling, the federal government will now be recognizing same-sex marriages in states which have already legalized it as a part of the marriage institution. As a result of the high court’s decision, paved the way for California’s Proposition 8 regarding marriage laws to be deemed unconstitutional as well.

Members of WBASNY have been firm advocates for equality in marriage, and President Donna Frosco claims that they are proud to have been able to participate in the efforts which lead to this court ruling. Frosco shares that the mission of WBASNY is to “promote the equal administration of justice” and they are thrilled to share their joys with the recent decision to overthrow the previous DOMA ruling which deprived so many individuals of their freedom to equal rights. The members of this association are pleased with the decisions made by California regarding marriage equality, and they urge other states to allow for the same rights in the marriage union for same-sex couples as well.

The Woman’s Bar Association of the State of New York consisted of over 3800 members and is a professional membership organization for lawyers of all genders throughout the state. The focus of the WBASNY is to promote woman’s rights, fight for the families and children in our country and enforce the fair administration of justice in all areas of both state and federal government levels.
