One Big Reason People Stay in Failing Marriages

Being alone. Always. That is the fear that many people admitted being influenced by in a recent study released in The Journal of Personality and Social Psychology. According to their research, one huge reason that adults decide to settle for and stay in a miserable relationship is that the alternative, being single, is too daunting. The research consisted of several studies investigating how the fear of being alone factors into a romantic relationship. The research involved adults from the U.S. and Canada, and was conducted by researchers at the University of Toronto.

In one of the surveys, 40 percent said they feared that they would not find a partner, 18 percent cited a fear of "spinsterhood", and 12 percent said that they feared losing their current significant other. An additional 11 percent said they feared ending life alone, and 7 percent said they would feel insignificant if they lived alone. These discoveries were likely expected. But this study further sought to determine how much this fear actually plays into decisions in a romantic relationship. According to a further survey, one with thousands of people involved, they found that this fear is powerful enough to motivate people to keep a miserable relationship, or to choose a less than ideal partner. As researchers noted, this seems to signal that many people's fears can lead them to "prioritize relationship status above relationship quality".

Of course, many people have made the realization that it can be far worse to be with the wrong person than to have no one.
