New Statistics on the Divorce Rate in the U.S.

New research continues to pour in on divorce rates and the effects of a divorce. Some of the results are surprising, and some are rather obvious. What do you think of the following report? According to research conducted by the National Center for Marriage and Family Research (NCFMR) at Bowling Green State University, the divorce rate has increased among women. Their report, released this year, said that currently, 15 percent of American women are either divorced or separated, this compared to less than one percent of American women being divorced or separated in 1920. This divorce statistic was gleaned from the National Vital Statistics, Decennial Census, and American Community Survey.

A co-director at NCFMR has said that this statistic is related to how culture has changed, that not only has divorce rate increased substantially, but the rate of women remarrying has also declined over the years. And according to the American Law and Economics Review, more than two-thirds of the divorces filed in the United States are filed by women. As culture and cultural attitudes change, and as more and more women are going for a divorce, research has also shown a spike in the divorce rate for couples who are older than 50.

In whatever circumstance you find yourself facing a divorce, one thing is certain, your future is at stake. This means successfully navigating your way through a complex legal process, a process that continually grows more complex. For as cultural perceptions change, so too do divorce laws.
