Super Bowl Domestic Violence Rumor Debunked

A myth began in 1993 that more women become victims of domestic violence on Super Bowl Sunday than any other day in the year. This year Yahoo ran a story on the myth, revealing that a coalition of women's groups in the early nineties made that claim at a press conference, beginning the rumor.

However, since that time the rumor has been debunked. Researchers like Christina Hoff Sommers, an American Enterprise Institute resident scholar and equity feminist, and Ken Ringle of the Washington Post, have tracked the rumor to its birth and studied crime statistics from Super Bowl Sundays past.

After discussing the origins of this fallacy Yahoo went on to state that misconceptions like these can actually be more harmful to victims of domestic violence.
