Same-Sex Couples Want Right to Divorce
Now that same-sex couples have the right to marry in many states, they want a different right, to divorce each other. This has been a problem in the District of Columbia, but if a new bill is passed, this too will be available to same-sex couples.
The bill is entitled "The Civil Dissolution Equality Amendment Act of 2011." It if is passed, it will allow couples that were married in the district to obtain a divorce in a different state. As it stands now, same-sex couples that are married in D.C. would have to return to the district in order to get a divorce. The bill will be reviewed by the D.C. Council, several of whom have already given their support.
Same-sex marriage was legalized in the District of Columbia in 2009. Since then, hundreds of same-sex couples have used the amendment to get married in the district.
