Cities Loosening Domestic Partnership Laws

Cities and townships across America are loosening their laws and allowing domestic partnerships to be recognized legally. Another city in Minnesota is joining the ranks this month.

After months of debate, the city's council has voted on the issue. A first reading was approved earlier this month, paving the way for a second reading that will decide the issue officially. Several other cities in the state including Minneapolis, Edina, Richfield and Edina have already passed similar laws that have established domestic partnership registries.

In order to qualify for the registry, both people must live in the city. This will apply for both homosexual and heterosexual relationships wherein both parties do not want to get married but are in a committed relationship. One council member is not happy with the idea, stating that it is not the role of the city to determine the legality of an issue such as domestic partnership registries.
