Violence Against Women Act to be Reauthorized

Although the same bill has been reauthorized multiple times over the past decade, lawmakers say that it still needs more work. The Violence Against Women Act is scheduled to be reauthorized this month and it has been tweaked to adjust for changing times. According to Senator Charles Schumer, domestic violence is a problem in New York State. Despite the increased efforts to protect victims and spread awareness of domestic violence, the reported figures are still high.

Between 2009 and 2010 alone there were 80,000 reported cases of domestic violence. It must be noted that those are only the reported cases and the actual figure is estimated to be much higher as many victims never report the crime of domestic violence. This bill has been signed into law multiple times not just to protect women, but the entire community as well. State lawmakers believe that when one person is the victim of domestic violence it can affect multiple members of the community, not just the victim. If you are a victim of domestic violence, stop the abuse now by contacting the Meyers Law Group to enlist help from an experienced Long Island family lawyer.
