Domestic Violence Reports Increase for Same Sex Couples

While many domestic violence stories revolve around straight couples, there appears to be an increase in violence amongst those in the gay and lesbian community.

In one city, there were seven deaths in the gay and lesbian community attributed to domestic violence. This is a serious increase from previous years where only one to three domestic abuse homicides were reported.

Another death was reported in this community just last week when a 47-year-old man was charged with killing his partner and then burying his body. As more and more abuse victims come forward from lesbian and gay partnerships, the legal system finds itself ill-equipped to deal with them.

Local advocates have been working with judges, police and even prosecutors to increase awareness about domestic violence and how it affects those in the LGBT community. However, some departments are showing resistance to learning more about violence in the gay and lesbian community; in some cases, officers have walked out of specialty workshops targeting LGBT issues.

Regardless of what type of union you may be involved in, if you have been a victim of abuse, now is the time to contact a Long Island domestic violence attorney from our law office who can help you take measures to combat continued maltreatment.
