New Mexico Wants to Pass Controversial Marriage Laws
Legislators in Mexico City, New Mexico are certainly stirring up the pot this month with their attempts to regulate marriage and now prenuptial agreements.
After proposing the idea of a temporary two-year marriage, legislators in the capital city want to do more. They now want every couple to sign a prenuptial agreement, but will focus mostly on matters concerning children produced during marriages.
By forcing couples to think about these matters before marriage, some legislators believe that the divorce rate will be reduced significantly. The bill goes even further by asking both parties to decide when they might be interested in obtaining a divorce, a measure that the government hopes will increase awareness about the importance of keeping marital bonds strong.
However, the Roman Catholic Church is not going to let these bills pass without a fight. Church officials are speaking publicly about how the government should not be controlling marriage, nor should it give couples the option of a temporary marriage license.
