City De-Criminalizes Domestic Violence

One city in Shawnee County is causing quite a stir this month by proposing the idea of de-criminalizing domestic violence.

It isn't the fact that city leaders do not think that domestic violence isn't a crime, but rather that there are not enough funds to prosecute those that inflict it. In a recent City Council meeting, a budget discussion led to talks about how the city government, the district attorney and the County Commission were at arms about who should be responsible for paying for these court cases.

During the discussion, the district attorney spoke about having to focus on felony cases only due to budget cutbacks, which meant those cases were being kicked over to the city government. By the end of the night, the vote was in at 7 to 3. Now, the local law stating that domestic violence is a crime has been repealed.
