People with Restraining Orders in Their Names to Wear GPS Devices

While a restraining order is the first step to protecting yourself against an abuser, it may not protect you completely.

There are too many stories in the news of women who obtained restraining orders, only to be found injured or killed afterward. One state is taking the protection of domestic violence victims to the next level by initiating a new program. Starting next year, the state will use GPS tracking devices for people who have restraining orders issued against them.

If a person with a restraining order against him/her enters a restricted area, the person who obtained the order will receive a phone call to evacuate immediately. The device will also send a phone call to the district attorney's office to alert it of the offense. To operate this device, the offender will have to pay $10 per day. If he/she shows that he/she cannot afford to make the payments, money will be withdrawn from witness protection funds to do so.

If you would like to obtain an order of protection quickly in the state of New York, turn to the services of a Long Island family law attorney by contacting the Meyers Law Group as soon as possible.
