Facebook Cited in 1 Out of 5 Divorces

Not only does Facebook bring friends together but it now helps drive marriages apart. According to a survey completed by the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers the social media site has been cited in 1 of 5 U.S. divorce cases.

Of the lawyers interviewed 80 percent said that their clients have tried or used Facebook during their divorce proceedings. Psychologist Steven Kimmons of Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, IL added that "we're coming across it more and more." Sometimes it is used to connect with old friends that then turn into lovers. Kimmons went on to say that Facebook allows the people to share personal stories that can "lead to a deepened sense of intimacy, which in turn can point the couple in the direction of physical contact."

Although many of these people may enter into relationships online with just plutonic intentions, some of them do wind up in extramarital affairs.

Do you believe that your loved one has used Facebook or another social media site to start an extramarital affair? If so, contact us to discuss your concerns with a Long Island divorce lawyer.
