75% of Domestic Violence Victims Wind Up In the Emergency Room

In a new study released by the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine researchers found that three quarters of domestic violence victims wind up in emergency rooms, but the majority of them are never identified as such.

Of the women who reported domestic assaults to police 80 percent visited an emergency room at least one time within four years after their first report. In fact, many of these reported visiting the hospital at least seven times each. And even though hospitals have policies in place that require medical personnel to screen for possible domestic violence victims only 28 percent of these victims were ever identified as such.

Researchers attribute this low number to the fact that most visits were for medical problems and not injuries commonly associated with domestic violence. Only 3.8 percent of visits actually stated assault as the reason for the visit. Other related studies have shown that as much as twenty percent of women have been victims of domestic violence within the previous year.
