Should a new bill be approved in New York state, same sex couples would be given the right to marry.
The bill seems to have overall approval, but could be help back by a group of Republican senators concerned with protecting religious groups. If the bill is passed, however, New York would become the sixth - and most populous - state to allow gay marriage in the nation. Just one more vote is needed to pass the bill, an act that legislators hope to accomplish before the summer recess. Since it has already been approved in the state assembly, the odds are good that it will also be passed in the senate.
Those Republican senators that are still holdouts on the bill have voiced their concerns about its passage. They have also discussed the possibility of extending exemptions to certain individuals and/or groups, such as religious sects that oppose same sex marriages.
