Ex Wife of Mexico's President Told She Can't Run for Office

Sandra Torres was informed this week that she will not be allowed to run for office, as officials believe that she used her divorce as a way to get around certain laws.

According to a report released last week, electoral officials in Guatemala decided that Torres would not be given the chance to run for president. They believe that the only reason she separated from husband and current President Alvaro Colom was to use a loophole in the law to run herself. However, neither Torres nor the Supreme Electoral Council has yet to issue an official report regarding her dismissal from the race.

While Torres could appeal her case to two higher courts, she is working under a deadline and is likely not to make it. If she cannot get her decision appealed by July 11, just two months shy of the September election, Torres will not get the chance to run in this year's election.
