Conflicting Reports Surround the Impact of Divorce on Children in Adulthood
This week, a shocking article in the Wall Street Journal states that children of divorce are more likely to be happier in their own marriages as adults.
The article goes on to describe two reasons why this is the case. Children who have seen the consequences of divorce firsthand are more likely to not want to experience the same problems as adults. Watching their own parents fight over certain aspects of their marriage makes adults more likely to avoid these same problems in their own, argues the article. The second argument is that when a step-parent becomes part of the family, the unit is strengthened and the child is able to see what a real, loving relationship is like.
While this may be the case for some individuals, statistics do not support these hypotheses. Some studies show that as many as 59% of those individuals who are children of divorce are more likely to become divorced in the future.
