Maryland Wants to Legalize Same-Sex Marriage
Legislators in Maryland are hoping to come up to speed with other states by passing a bill that will allow same-sex marriage in the state. While this is occurring lawmakers in Montgomery County passed a bill that will allow domestic partnerships to be eligible for the same benefits that married couples can get.
Under this new law same-sex couples that were married in an area of the country where it is legal will be considered domestic partners in Maryland. However, they must also be over the age of 18, have been living together for over a year and "are responsible for each other's welfare." The Equal Benefits Law, as it has been entitled, will demand county contractors to give same-sex partners the same family medical leave, bereavement leave, health benefits, dental benefits, sick leave, life insurance, disability insurance and retirement benefits that are enjoyed by married couples.
This new law will go into effect January 1, 2011.
