Domestic Violence Shelters See Increased Enrollment Numbers
Domestic violence shelters across the country are reporting increasing enrollment numbers as the economic crisis has forced many victims to simply leave their home situations and seek help.
Laura Berry, executive director for the Indiana Coalition Against Domestic Violence, says that sources of shelter that victims of abuse would traditionally have turned to have not been able to accommodate them over the past 18 months.
In the city of Indianapolis alone the percentage of families that are occupying two shelters at the same time has increased by nine percent from the previous year.
Now that there is an increase in demand for shelters it seems that the government is making it harder to accommodate these victims by cutting funding. Both federal and state sources of funding are reaching all time lows across the country.
