Shocking Domestic Violence Statistics

Domestic violence can often leave the victims feeling like they are alone and helpless, but it is a terrible offense that happens to millions of people every year across America. If you or someone you know is a victim then you will be interested in reading these following facts about domestic violence.

A woman is beaten or assaulted every nine seconds in the US. Globally one in every three women has been forced to have sex, beaten or otherwise abused, often at the hands of a family member. More than muggings, rapes and car accidents combined, domestic violence is the number one killer of women in the US.

Young females experience domestic violence in an alarming way: one in five teenagers have a boyfriend that threatens to harm himself or the girl if she decides to break up with him. As the women get older the violence becomes more disturbing as three women are killed by their husbands every day.

Of women surveyed about societal problems 92% of them list reducing sexual assault and domestic violence as a top priority. As a result of this violence 8 million days of work are lost each year by women who are victims - this amounts to 32,000 full-time jobs.
