International Child Custody Case Makes Headlines
One woman faces jail time for taking her daughter away from the biological father for several years. The woman, who fled to her native Japan, has promised to return the now 9-year-old girl on Christmas Day.
If the mother actually returns the child, it would be a model case for hundreds of similar cases that have plagued both U.S, and international courts. In Japan alone there are hundreds of children that have been taken by one parent away from the other. Although the father is happy about the news, he is cautiously optimistic. He is worried that his daughter has been brainwashed by his ex-wife into believing that he is not a good father.
However, he believes that once his daughter is back home with him, they will be able to repair the relationship. Since Japan is one of the only G7 countries that did not agree to the international compact about child abduction, it has been difficult for parents like this father to gain access to their children.
