Alimony Reform Moving Across the Country

In many divorces, one spouse will be asked to pay alimony to the other spouse. This means that for a certain period of time, sometimes for the rest of that person's life, payments will be made to the other spouse for living expenses.

While each state has laws regarding alimony, most states have not looked at their spousal support laws in decades. A new movement is forming across the country in which regular people, lawmakers and judges alike are considering alimony reform. One such state, Massachusetts, has already changed its alimony laws to take into consideration the current economic climate.

The alimony reform movement is focusing more on those individuals that are forced to pay lifetime support. In some cases, these payments are causing financial ruin to the person making the payments. While no two alimony cases are alike, some states are considering a formula that would help judges make more uniform decisions when it comes to spousal support payments.
