Wife Petitions Court Over Divorce Settlement

Rather than mourning the loss of her ex-husband, one woman in Providence, New York is petitioning to have a portion of her divorce settlement thrown out.

After the husband's untimely death in 2006, the woman became one of three co-executors in his will. However, now that the government has levied $2.8 million worth of taxes against the $17.7 million estate he left behind, the woman is attempting to circumvent paying any additional fines. She now claims that she was forced to obtain the divorce and that her husband coerced her through fraudulent means to accept the terms of their divorce.

While her attorneys did file a marital deduction with the Internal Revenue Service, the documents were returned. They were rejected by the agency after it claimed that fraud by been committed by the woman and her legal team. An additional $1.1 million was added on as a penalty fee for trying to defraud the government. Unwilling to accept her role in this act, the woman is now petitioning the U.S. Tax Court to have the fines thrown out.
