New Bill Addresses Firearm Rights of Domestic Violence Offenders
In the state of New York, it is getting increasingly harder for the authorities to enforce a current weapons law that prohibits "just anyone" from buying or possessing a firearm, especially those convicted of domestic abuse.
At this time, anyone who has been convicted of a misdemeanor domestic violence charge is unable to purchase a firearm under U.S. law. Yet, the definition of a domestic violence misdemeanor has never been spelled out clearly by New York law. To address this dilemma, an assemblywoman worked with the FBI and wrote and sponsored a bill.
Should a domestic violence offender possess or carry a firearm, it will be considered a domestic violence misdemeanor according to the new bill. Although it will not cut incidents of domestic violence drastically, it will make it more difficult for harassers to hurt or intimidate their victims through the use of a firearm.
