Court Called Upon to Divide $450 Million Fortune

Most people have difficulty dividing their assets during a divorce, but for one New York couple, the sum is greater than usual.

The divorce between a financier and his ex-wife began in 2009 and will finally see its day in court. After working his way through the highest echelon of the finance world, the husband amassed a large fortune of $450 million. During their 30 year marriage, however, his wife stayed home, taking care of all the arrangements concerning their private life. However, despite his wife's domestic role, the husband is asking for most of the amount since it was his hard work that created the fortune.

In a strange turn of events, his legal defense submitted psychological testimony from three psychiatrists. They painted the husband as having unique personal traits that they argued should be rewarded with the majority of his fortune. The judge was not impressed and rejected the motion immediately. Instead, he quoted the state's law regarding equitable distribution for divorce cases.

If you are not familiar with the laws of equitable distribution and are hoping to get divorced in New York, you'll want to contact a Long Island equitable distribution attorney from our law office who can advise you of laws and how they will impact the division of your wealth and assets.
