All Couples Should Consider Prenups due to Divorce Rate

As New York makes history by allowing same sex couples to seek marriages, couples across the state have either gotten hitched or are making plans to do so. However, there are some who want to warn same sex couples that while marriage may seem like a luxury now, divorce can happen to anyone, straight or not.

Since half of marriages in the United States end in divorce, it is not unlikely that gay and lesbian couples would not also be susceptible. According to statistics, of the 639 couples that were wed on July 24 alone, more than 315 could seek a divorce in the near or distant future. Even though many of these couples have been together for a long time, they may still find themselves wanting to terminate their marriages.

Due to the current divorce rate, same sex couples and straight couples alike should consider signing a prenuptial agreement in order to protect their assets should their marriages end. Even those couples that have been together for decades should have a legal form of protection on hand if they hope to keep what is theirs should they terminate their marriages.

If you want to create a prenuptial agreement to protect your assets in the event of divorce, contact a Long Island divorce lawyer at our firm to discuss what legal measures you will have to take to create a binding agreement that will uphold in court.
