Study Shows Increase in Domestic Abuse Amongst Sports Fans
A new study released by the National Institutes of Health shows a disturbing increase in domestic violence by sports fans.
Utilizing data gathered from police reports, the study shows that as much as ten percent of domestic violence can be attributed in certain areas to the loss of a beloved local National Football team after a game. The information was gathered from 900 regular season NFL games that covered a span of 11 years. These teams included the Detroit Lions, the Carolina Panthers, New England Patriots, Denver Broncos, Tennessee Titans and Kansas City Chiefs between 1995 and 2006.
Looking at local police reports the spike in domestic violence was highest, nearing 20 percent, when the home team lost to a traditional rival. Yet domestic violence was still present when the home team lost to a non-rival, representing an 8 percent increase.
