People Challenge Orthodox Jewish Divorce

A crowd formed outside of University Towers last week, many bearing signs such as "Shame on You" and "Aharon Friedman, give Tamar the get."

Led by the Organization for the Resolution of Agunot, the protest was directed at Friedman, to give a get to Tamar Epstein. Under Jewish law, a "get" is a Jewish decree of divorce. Under Orthodox Judaism, if the wife does not receive a divorce, she cannot get married again or even date, even when the divorce has been legally completed.

The argument for the get began over visitation rights for their three-year-old daughter. According to Rabbi Jeremy stern, director of ORA, "What we're really working on is behind-the-scenes discussions. Not that we wouldn't have another protest in the future." However, the organization does not have any plans to hold another protest like the one held in December, which drew over 100 people from New York, Philadelphia, Kemp Mill and Wheaton.

Every case of "get" is different; some range from just a few weeks, while others can take years.
