Man Brings Handgun to Child Custody Hearing

In California, authorities report that 45-year-old James Knapp and heard a family court room with a handgun.  On Tuesday, Knapp pled not guilty to charges that he brought a loaded .45 caliber handgun into a courthouse in San Mateo County on July 12th.  Knapp was allegedly on his way to a child custody hearing.

According to police, the weapon was found in Knapp's backpack as it was put through an x-ray machine at 1:00 PM at the Hall of Justice, which is located in Redwood City, California.  When the handgun was discovered, Knapp said he was unaware the weapon was in his backpack.  He allowed authorities to search his vehicle, where another magazine for the handgun was found in his glove compartment said prosecutors.

Initially, Knapp was booked into the Maguire Correctional Facility and bailed out on a $50,000 bond.  Authorities say that Knapp was at the courthouse in order to petition for a modification of his child custody order.
