Divorce Rate Continues to Decrease

According to data from the National Marriage Project at the University of Virginia, the divorce rate per 1,000 married women decreased to 16.4 in 2009 from 16.9 the year prior.  In 1980, the rate was 22.6 per 1,000 married women.

For many, the divorce rate has been a tricky statistic with some people using figures as projections or using experiences from one generation to come to conclusions about marriage.  However, most statisticians will agree that the overall divorce rate has been on the decline since the 1970s.

The decrease in divorces speaks to a historical trend of the number of divorces in an economic downturn decreasing.  Even during a time when people are waiting to get married and have kids, the divorce rate is decreasing.   It is reported that a poor real estate market, high unemployment rate and escalating legal fees may be causing couples to hold off on divorce.
