New NY Law Passed to Fight Domestic Violence
New York has passed a law that will be used to fight domestic violence by making it easier for prosecutors to charge a person with the crime. International strangulation has now been deemed a violent felony which will add jail time for offenders that are convicted. Strangulation is involved in approximately one-third of all cases in new York, according to the Erie County Family Justice Center.
Dennis Gabryszak, who sponsored the law that is now in effect, says, "It's something that will not be tolerated and we need to continue to pass laws to make sure anyone who is a perpetrator will be dealt with very seriously."
Locals in Erie County are teaming up with the Family Justice Center of Erie County to inform people of violent relationships that they are not alone in their struggles and hope is around the corner. An advoke that has also left a violent relationship is Malika Henry. Henry says on the subject, "Domestic violence is real in Buffalo. Don't let this go under the radar. Everyone has to say enough is enough."
