Man Hiding in New York Sent to Prison for Felony Failure to Pay Child Support

Walter J. Zinkiewitz Jr., 47, of Valparaiso was sentenced to six years in prison for failure to pay child support. Zinkiewitz had been making regular payments on the $50,000 in back child support that he owed, but he failed to follow the rules of his probation sentence. Zinkiewitz's six year prison term is the remainder of the original eight year probation which he was sentenced to in 2008.

Zinkiewitz had reduced the amount he owed to $45,499 since he pleaded guilty to felony failure to pay child support in May, 2008, but he stopped showing up for scheduled meetings in July, 2009, according to his probation officer. Zinkiewitz also went out of state without permission and didn't show for a scheduled substance abuse evaluation.

Zinkiewitz was extradited back to Indiana from New York City for his trial. He acted as his own attorney.
