Men Have a Tougher Time in Bad Relationships than Women
A recent study out of Wake Forest University examined the correlation between mental health and relationships in over 1,000 college-age people in Florida and found that men have a harder time dealing with a rocky relationship than women. Men also get a greater psychological boost when things are going well than their female counterparts.
Women have a harder time dealing with a breakup and are prone to depression as a result, but emotional stress during a relationship is higher for men and correlates to greater substance use and abuse. Debbie Mandel, author of Addicted to Stress says, "Men can feel lost when a relationship is in trouble because they do not have the support system women do. Men turn the sword inward to substance abuse to replace that relationship high."
Unfortunately, substance abuse and emotional stress can contribute to separation and even divorce.
